🫸 prepare for push back 🫷

"Okay, so we laughed about this but didn't fully decide... are we giving ourselves permission to not send the newsletter today?"

^Sent this message to Chelle last week after we'd had a total face-palm 🤦‍♀️moment realizing it was the 15th and our newsletter was supposed to go out that day.

[ you should probably join us in the Magnetic Messaging Lab ]

Even after years running companies and helping other people grow their businesses (more than a few to over $1 million in annual revenue, don't mind us as we toot our own horns), we still drop the ball sometimes.

Because life happens and we're starting something new together and no matter how many times you've done something, a new moment will come with growing pains.

But where do you find that balance between the moments when you do something even though you don't want to, don't feel like you have time, don't have the energy...

And the times when, like Chelle and I did, you give yourself permission to send the email out late?

So many of the business gurus out there tell us that there is no balance, there's just the hustle. You wake up at 5 am because that's what people who win do. You send the email no matter what because that's what people who succeed do. You work hard no matter what because that's what people who have what it takes do.

We're not those business gurus.

As evidenced by the fact that this email is sliding into your inbox almost a week after it was 'supposed' to arrive.

But we're also not the people who will tell you to just go with the flow or do what feels good. We do actually believe there's a balance, and it comes down to a pretty nerdy cost-benefit analysis.

In the Momentum coaching call last week, one of our founders was debating pushing back their launch.

I suspect most of us know this feeling, when we're thinking of pushing something back, but beating ourselves up because it feels like we're repeating the pattern of procrastinating and giving up before we even have a chance to see our business grow. Anyone?

There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer here, so let's go to the cost-benefit analysis.

When you're launching, there are potential benefits, right? Sales, new people coming into your world, cash flow, getting to do the work you love doing. Yay!

There are also potential costs. These aren't talked about as much.

When you launch and it doesn't go well, your brain + body gather that as 'evidence' of how things work for you. So if you launch when you don't have the bandwidth, you know you didn't spend enough time in the pre-launch phase, your audience isn't big enough or more importantly your conversion rate is too low to support the launch goals you've got, etc., you're running the risk of training your nervous system that launching is hard. That things just don't work for you. That you're missing something everyone else has or gets or understands.

That's a pretty big risk, you know?

Especially when so many of us are already walking around with some gunk in our brains telling us all sorts of nonsense.

So in those moments, we want to invite you to give yourself radical permission to pause.

Push the launch, push the email, push it back. BUT! Yes, we have a but here...

We also have to consider the consequences of pushing back.

When we pushed back this email, it ate at me every day I didn't do it. Not a huge weight on my shoulders, but definitely a weight.

We also broke our flow of regularly sending emails and building trust, and it meant that we have less time to tell you about the Magnetic Messaging Lab which we're so excited about and really hope you'll join us for.

When you push back a launch, you've got to consider consequences like disrupting trust with your audience. Self-confidence issues if you start telling yourself a story like, 'see, I never finish things or do what I say I'm going to do.' Cash flow disruption, that may or may not impact your quality of life. You get the idea.

We believe that a truly sustainable business requires a balance between discipline and flexibility.

Balance, mind you, is not a fixed number or ratio. If only it were that simple. Instead, it's a case by case flow where you apply this cost-benefit framework to the decision making process, and make the best decision for your life, your business, in the current circumstances of your reality.

Because a business that doesn't adapt to you and support your needs is never, ever going to be a sustainable business. That said, another thing that will never be a sustainable business is one that struggles to grow because it lacks a clear message!

So whatever stage of business you're in, we hope you'll join us in the Magnetic Messaging Lab next week.

PS everyone inside of Momentum gets free access to the Messaging Lab, and all of our other monthly challenges, pop-ups and sprints, like next month's Spring Cleaning Opps challenge. All of that plus monthly coaching and co-working sessions. So if you've been thinking about joining us in Momentum, consider this your invitation.

Chelle & Chelsea

Simple Websites: I (Chelle) discovered this incredibly simple site while doing research for a school paper, and I'm just obsessed. I love how clear it is, from the first sentence all the way through. In a world where we're all exposed to so much noise, simplicity feels so, so good.

Threads: as a long-winded Pisces, I (Chelsea) am so surprised at not just how much I'm loving Threads, but how quickly I'm growing and connecting with people! This is a testament to two things; first, it is easier to grow on new platforms. It is easier to connect when things are less saturated. Early adoption has serious benefits. Second, every single marketing channel can work, and the ones that will work best for your business are the ones that you enjoy and the align strategically with your business and business goals.

Momentum Coworking Sessions: honestly, we're both feeling a little bit overwhelmed by how incredible the people inside of Momentum are. So yes, this is a shameless plug that you should probably get in there, but beyond that we just want to shout out every single person in this space. The way they show up, do the damn work, support one another, ask the hard questions, keep trying... it's just so damn inspiring to us.

You: last but certainly not least, we are loving you. On the days when it all feels too hard, thinking about you truly helps us get up and keep going. Thank you for being here.

I knew I needed to talk to Jonathan about the fact that I wouldn’t be able to contribute as much to rent this month. I’d known it for weeks, as my launch didn’t fill as quickly as I’d hoped, and person after person told me they were interested in the next round. Then, a 1:1 client’s payment failed, and I felt my body go rigid. I was terrified. I knew I needed to reach out to the client, but couldn’t do it from such a freaked out place. I knew I needed to make a plan for how we were going to...

“So I was just looking at joining this new program, have you heard of it?” I was sitting across from one of my good friends, a former client turned business bestie turned IRL friend, talking about our businesses and the things we were seeing in the online world, when I felt the pang of not-enoughness flush across my face. “Oh, yeah… I’ve heard of it, but I actually don’t follow her,” I took a gulp of water as my friend tilted her head, confused. “I just… whenever I see her stuff, it reminds...

Welcome to Emotions Are Expensive: the emotional cost of doing business and how to stop paying it. When I was thinking about how I wanted to talk about my new 1:1 offer The Empathy Edge, I kept thinking back on all the shit that has gotten in my way (and my clients’ ways) when it comes to making the kind of money we want to make in our businesses. And the biggest one isn’t messaging, it isn’t a shite offer, it isn’t a small audience… it’s the gnarly emotions and mind drama that come with...
